A six-year study was carried out in an organically managed orange orchard located in Sicily (Southern Italy) to assess the effect of compost and organic fertilizers utilisation on soil quality. Adopting a randomized-block experimental design with three replicates, four treatments were carried out. In treatments 1 and 2, two different composts (C1 from distillery by products and C2 from livestock wastes) were applied. The plots of treatment 3 were fertilized using dried poultry manure. The control treatment was fertilized with mineral/synthetic fertilizers. In order to verify the hypothesis that composts and organic fertilizers improve soil fertility, soil quality was evaluated by selecting dynamic soil parameters, as indicators linked to C and N cycles. Total organic C, total N, C/N ratio, humified fraction, isoelectric focusing (IEF) of extracted organic matter, microbial biomass C, potentially mineralisable N under anaerobic conditions, potenzially mineralizable C, C mineralization quotient and metabolic quotient were determined for each sample. Furthermore, the Comunity level Physiological Profile (by Biolog tecnique) was defined, calculating derived functional biodiversity and versatility indexes. Parameters related to IEF and potentially mineralizable C showed significant differences among the treatments. Moreover, total C, total N and humification parameters tended to increase, while no differences were observed in biodiversity indexes. On these findings, it was concluded that composts and poultry manure only weakly affected soil properties, though they increased soil nutritive elements potentially available to crops

Study of charge state enhancement by means of the coupling of a Laser Ion Source to the ECR ion source SERSE

    Get PDF
The possibility to produce intense ion beams from solid elements, by using a pulsed Laser ion source as the first stage of the superconducting ECR ion source SERSE is discussed in the following. The Laser ion source may be used to produce negative or positive ions and electrons that are injected into the plasma of SERSE. The design of the experimental setup and the study of the extraction of ions from a target by means of Nd:Yag laser irradiation are briefly described. This Laser ion source will be located in the plasma chamber of the source SERSE, in presence of its magnetic field. A simple evaluation of the charge state enhancement inside the ECR plasma is also presented in the following

Creative connectivity project – A network based approach to understand correlations between interdisciplinary group dynamics and creative performance

    Get PDF
Creativity, technology and innovation are fundamental driving forces that often trigger behavioural and cultural changes in our societies. Several studies on creative collaborations emphasise the interconnection between the creation of innovation and interdisciplinarity. Studying the interdisciplinary processes through which innovation is generated is thus of fundamental importance. The Creative Connectivity project investigates the links between group dynamics and interdisciplinary creative processes in the attempt to identify the emergence of meaningful behavioural patterns. Taking the Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) programme at the Royal College of Art as a case study, the research addresses the need to develop a more rigorous understanding of the creation of innovation fostered by diversity, a risk-taking culture and acceptance of failure. A novel approach combining data science and network theory has been developed to monitor, quantify and analyse specific dynamics of interdisciplinary groups of students at the IDE programme. The focus was to investigate the network contribution to the performance of a team in an environment that is naturally interdisciplinary by using data respectively from a bespoke developed web application and a conversation activity monitoring system. Initial findings have shown the potential of this approach to unveiling the hidden mechanisms behind creativity and the production of innovation through interdisciplinary approaches. The results of this research could be of interest for universities, research centres, start-ups incubators, and policymakers who want to foster creativity and trigger innovative processes

Dbl oncogene expression in MCF-10 A epithelial cells disrupts mammary acinar architecture, induces EMT and angiogenic factor secretion.

The proteins of the Dbl family are guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) of Rho GTPases and are known to be involved in cell growth regulation. Alterations of the normal function of these proteins lead to pathological processes such as developmental disorders, neoplastic transformation, and tumor metastasis. We have previously demonstrated that expression of Dbl oncogene in lens epithelial cells modulates genes encoding proteins involved in epithelial-mesenchymal-transition (EMT) and induces angiogenesis in the lens. Our present study was undertaken to investigate the role of Dbl oncogene in epithelial cells transformation, providing new insights into carcinoma progression. To assess how Dbl oncogene can modulate EMT, cell migration, morphogenesis, and expression of pro-apoptotic and angiogenic factors we utilized bi- and three-dimensional cultures of MCF-10░A cells. We show that upon Dbl expression MCF-10░A cells undergo EMT. In addition, we found that Dbl overexpression sustain

Open innovation, value creation and value capture : an introduction

    Get PDF
To be successful in open innovation, firms need to craft an effective strategy for both value creation and value capture. However, these two aspects are difficult to combine, and there are important tensions that deserve closer examination. The aim of this special section is to offer original perspectives on key conceptual and empirical research questions related to how open innovation can help organizations to create and capture value, the extent to which there might be a tension between value creation and value capture in open innovation strategies, and how this tension can be effectively dealt wit

M13 phages uptake of gold nanoparticles for radio-and thermal-therapy and contrast imaging improvement

    Get PDF
The presented work deals with the uptake of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) by M13 phages in solutions. In particular, the Au NPs uptake modalities and their localization in the filamentous phages are evaluated and measured. Gold spherical nanoparticles (with an average diameter of the order of 10 nm) are obtained by laser ablation in water with a sodium citrated surfactant. The interest of such application comes from the possibility to employ living biological structures to transport heavy metallic nanoparticles inside cells of tumoral tissues. Indeed, phages have the capability to introduce Au NPs in the proximity to the cell nucleus, increasing the efficiency of DNA destruction in the tumoral cells by employing low doses of ionizing radiation during radiotherapy and hyperthermia treatments. Several analyses and microscopy characterizations of the prepared phages samples embedding gold nanoparticles are presented, demonstrating that the presence of Au NPs increases the phages imaging contrast

HCV derived from sera of HCV-infected patients induces pro-fibrotic effects in human primary fibroblasts by activating GLI2

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a leading cause of liver fibrosis, especially in developing countries. The process is characterized by the excess accumulation of ECM that may lead, over time, to hepatic cirrhosis, liver failure and also to hepatocarcinoma. The direct role of HCV in promoting fibroblasts trans-differentiation into myofibroblasts, the major fibrogenic cells, has not been fully clarified. In this study, we found that HCV derived from HCV-infected patients infected and directly induced the trans-differentiation of human primary fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, promoting fibrogenesis. This effect correlated with the activation of GLI2, one of the targets of Hedgehog signaling pathway previously reported to be involved in myofibroblast generation. Moreover, GLI2 activation by HCV correlated with a reduction of autophagy in fibroblasts, that may further promoted fibrosis. GLI2 inhibition by Gant 61 counteracted the pro-fibrotic effects and autophagy inhibition mediated by HCV, suggesting that targeting HH/GLI2 pathway might represent a promising strategy to reduce the HCV-induced fibrosis
